Connected V16 beacon in Spain: what is valid from 2026

Short answer
Since 1 January 2026, a connected and certified V16 beacon is the only authorised warning device in Spain for the affected stopped vehicles. Warning triangles and non-connected V16 beacons are no longer valid substitutes under the Spanish rule.
What changed on 1 January 2026
The DGT states that the connected V16 became the only authorised danger-warning device in Spain from 1 January 2026, replacing warning triangles. A non-connected V16 that was usable during the transition is no longer valid for this purpose.
The beacon combines a high-intensity 360-degree flashing light with connectivity to DGT 3.0. When activated, it communicates the stopped vehicle’s location so the incident can be shared through road information systems.
How to check that a beacon is valid
Do not rely on a marketplace title or a generic ‘V16’ label. Check the DGT’s current list of certified makes and models and verify the certification and expiry information on the product.
- The model appears on the DGT’s certified-device list.
- Connectivity is built into the device; it does not depend on a phone application.
- The purchase price includes at least 12 years of connectivity, with no separate mobile-data fee for the driver.
- The device and packaging show the applicable expiry information.
Privacy and placement
The DGT explains that location is transmitted when the beacon is activated. It is not a continuous vehicle-tracking device. Keep it accessible inside the vehicle and follow the certified manufacturer’s placement instructions, preferably using the highest suitable exterior point without exposing yourself to traffic.

Can I still use warning triangles in Spain in 2026?
